What We Do - Mission
Gender inequality is a pervasive characteristic of all sectors of life in Bali due to four decades of gender biased development policies and a patrilineal kinship system. Bali Sruti is committed to diminish the present level of gender inequity and improve the quality of life of women and children in Bali.
Objective :
To promote awareness on today’s issues relevant to women and children in Bali and empower the stakeholders - women, government institutions, CSO’s and NGO’s - to find suitable solutions based on the principle of gender equity.
BIWA and Sruti working together
BIWA hosted an afternoon tea at the lovely Villa Mahapala in Sanur, where one of our members, Sita, gave a talk about "Women's Issues in Bali" and the work and aims of the Sruti Foundation. This foundation was established in 2004 to try to improve the lives of women and children in Bali. BIWA has been supporting this foundation for many years. Sita Van Bemmelen is a co-founder of Sruti.
Sita explained that there are 5 areas of concern identified by the foundation, namely, education, health, economics, culture and politics. She presented some disturbing information and statistics such as the still high mortality rate of women in childbirth, poor literacy rates in many rural areas, and limited education for girls. She described the lack of knowledge with respect to HIV/AIDS, birth control, cancer, nutrition as well as the rights of women and children affected by domestic violence. Women make up 42% of income generating work in Bali, but have little representation in politics where major decisions are made. Women need a voice, and to get this the women need power to press for change.
The talk was most informative and BIWA is proud to sponser such an organisation. Sita has agreed to hold another seminar in the future for those who could not come to this one.
